Telephone System Problems And Simple Solutions

A telephone line is simply the connection that links a single telephone system to a network so that it is able to make independent calls.

Although it is common knowledge that telephone systems aren’t as widely used today as they used to be, having been neglected for the more portable cell phones, many homes still rely on the telephone systems.

In this blog post, we will be looking into the common problems associated with telephones and simple telephone line repairs.

How do they work?
The telephone is a low voltage receiver and transmitter. It reproduces and distributes sound over distances. When a phone call is placed from another telephone, the telephone that placed the call undergoes a number of main and local exchanges that keeps it routed to the receiving telephone, transmitted over metal cables, fibre optic cables or radio links. Likewise, the mobile phone is usually connected to a base station by radio signals. This whole process makes up the telephone system.

If you are having problems with your telephone, it may be an issue with the telephone itself, the phone lines within the house, the modular jack, or the line outdoors which is the responsibility of the company.

Problems And Simple Fixes

  • Phone Doesn’t Work: You want to make a phone call, and you notice your telephone isn’t working at all, do not panic. This might be a problem with the phone itself.
Unplug it and test the plug with another phone. If it works, then it means the first telephone was the problem, and you need to replace it or get an expert to fix it.

However, if the second phone doesn’t work, plug the first telephone directly into the telephone network interface module. This is usually located in the box outside where the telephone lines come through into your house. Once you’ve done this and the phone now works, then the problem was from within the house. However, if the problem still persists, then the issue is with the company lines, and you may have to call the company for your telephone line repairs.

  • Continuous Dial Noise: Do you get a continuous dial tone even when dialling? It is possible that the green and red wires within your telephone have been interchanged.
To solve this problem, if it affects a number of your telephones, you can try removing the cover to the network interface model and reverse the coloured cords to their rightful places. However, if it affects only one of your telephone lines, uncover the telephone’s module jack with a screwdriver, and then switch back the red and green wires connecting to the phone.
  • No Dial Tone: If your telephone doesn’t make any dial sound, this may be as a result of improper wire connections, or it may be that your telephone device itself is faulty.

To deal with this issue, check your telephone wires for any sign of damage. Disconnect the cable and any other external device plugged to it. Leave it in that state for at least a minute, and then reconnect it and turn the telephone back on. The issue should be resolved, however, if the problem still persists, then you might need to call in an expert to diagnose the issue.

  • Cracking Line: A cracking telephone line can be caused by a number of reasons. It is usually caused by unseen moisture found within the hardware of the outside equipment or electrical interferences.
To take care of this problem, check the outside equipment for any signs of watermarks. Also, check the cable connection and the jack it is connected to.

In case of electrical interferences, ensure that your telephone isn’t located close to any of your electrical devices like your TV, radio, answering machines and even other phones. If you have done all these and your line still seems to crack, then consider hiring the services of a telephone line repairs expert.

  • Line Echo: This can be caused by a number of issues. It could be a problem with the line, damage caused by water, improperly connected wire or issues with the transmission signal.

You can inspect the hardware of your telephone for signs of moisture and wipe clean with a dry cloth. Ensure that your telephone cables are not twisted or broken in any way.

Whenever you place a phone call, you can ask the recipient to turn down the volume of the phone line and check if the echo is still there. Also, try moving away from appliances with sound transmission like your radio or TV.

  • Line Not Able to Receive Calls: This is usually accompanied by an error message. It could be caused when the line isn’t properly dropped after a phone call.
To fix this, ensure that the handheld telephone is placed properly on the device to end calls. To avoid the “line in use” error message, check to make sure that no one else is using the line. Ensure that the telephone cables are properly connected.

You could also try unplugging the phone and putting it back. If the problem persists, try resetting the line with another telephone line. Going a long time without your telephone line could come at a cost. Problems with your telephone lines could also lead to other problems, hence, dealing with such issues on time is the best way to go.

There are many problems associated with telephone lines. These problems could easily get out of hand and beyond what simple fixes can solve. Ensure that you call in an I.T expert when problems with your telephone line seem out of hand.
